Once or Twice Around

Many layouts have the mainline and train traverse the whole layout once, only passing through each "scene" one time.

Other layouts, to name a few, Gorre &Daphetid, The Puffer Bridge Lines & The Coal Belt are a twice aound layout, kind of a folded figure eight, to give about twice the mainline space.a

So the question is, which is better, once around or twice around.

Thank you for your input.

Some design plans...

Recently I asked the question on a site interested in finding peoples favorite 4'x8' layout designs. I didn't get the information I was looking for. I was looking for some track plans to steal ideas from. Instead I was told things I already know about layout design. The 4'x8' is not the best use of your floor space or materials.

I already have plans to use the basic "HOG RR" deasign, though my ideas repeatedly grow to things that are currently unmanigable.

Well, what I am looking at right now is roughly adapting the Gorre & Daphetid to the 8'x9' 12" wide donut shelf of the HOG RR.

Ideas include lengthening the branch and adding a mine and lumber camp.

I'd like to find an old PRR and/or a RDG branch that I can use for the basis.

Well, more notes to follow.
